Why Bali

The World's Most Beloved Island — Ancient Culture Meets Tropical Paradise

Bali is simply unlike anywhere else. It is a Hindu island in the world's largest Muslim nation — a living culture of daily temple offerings, traditional dance performances, ancient rice terrace farming systems and deeply spiritual values that permeate every aspect of daily life. Layer onto this extraordinary volcanic landscapes, world-class surf, affordable luxury villas with private pools, and some of Asia's best food, and it becomes clear why Bali has captured the imagination of travellers from around the world. From Nepal, a connecting flight reaches Bali in 5–6 hours. Visa-on-arrival for USD 35 gives 30 days.

⭐ Must Visit
Ubud — Cultural Heart of Bali

Ubud is the soul of Bali — a town in the central volcanic highlands surrounded by rice terraces, sacred monkey forests, traditional artisan villages, healing centres and a daily rhythm of temple ceremonies, gamelan music and Kecak fire dance performances. The Tegalalang Rice Terrace is 20 minutes north; the Sacred Monkey Forest is a 15-minute walk from the palace. Start any Bali trip here.

📍 Central highlands ⏱ 3–4 days minimum 🎭 Daily dance shows
Tanah Lot sunset sea temple Bali Hindu ocean
🕌 Sacred Temples
Tanah Lot & Uluwatu

Tanah Lot — a sea temple perched on a dramatic offshore rock — is the most photographed sunset spot in Bali. Uluwatu, on the southern Bukit Peninsula cliffs 70m above the sea, hosts the most dramatic Kecak fire dance at sunset (daily, 6pm). Together they represent the extraordinary spiritual relationship between Balinese Hinduism and the ocean.

🏄 Surf & Beach
Seminyak & Canggu

Seminyak — stylish beach clubs, rooftop bars, designer boutiques and world-class restaurants along the Indian Ocean. Canggu — the cooler, more alternative neighbour: rice paddies beside surf schools, excellent coffee shops, yoga studios and a young creative community. Both offer the best sunset beach bars in Bali and legendary surf at Echo Beach.

🌋 Volcano
Mount Batur 1,717m

The most popular sunrise trek in Bali — depart at 2am, summit by 5:30am for one of Indonesia's most beautiful sunrises over the volcanic lake and distant Rinjani. Active volcano with black lava fields, hot springs below and a caldera lake. No technical experience needed — 2-hour climb through ash forest on good trails with a guide (compulsory).

Less developed than Bali proper with a wild, raw energy.

Besakih Mother Temple

The holiest and largest Hindu temple complex in Bali — perched on the slopes of the sacred volcano Mount Agung at 1,000m. A complex of 23 temples representing all Balinese Hindu families. Balinese Food

🍛 What to Eat in Bali

Babi guling, nasi campur, sambal matah, satay and tropical fruit

Nasi campur Bali mixed rice dish Indonesian food
Nasi Campur
Bali's everyday staple — a mound of steamed rice surrounded by small portions of 5–8 different dishes: spiced chicken, satay skewers, crispy fried tempeh, sambal chilli paste, steamed vegetables, a fried egg, kerupuk crackers and peanut sauce. Every warung does it differently. Eat it at Warung Babi Guling Ibu Oka in Ubud for the definitive version. USD 2–4 anywhere.
📍 All warungs USD 2–5
Satay skewers Bali grilled chicken beef peanut sauce
Sate Lilit (Balinese Satay)
Unlike standard Indonesian satay (minced meat on a skewer), Bali's sate lilit is made from spiced minced fish or pork wrapped around lemongrass stalks and grilled over coconut shell charcoal. The result is deeply aromatic — kaffir lime, galangal, turmeric and chilli infused into every bite. Found at temple ceremonies and every street corner across Bali. Sublime with sambal matah.
📍 Street stalls USD 2–4
Bali smoothie bowl acai breakfast Ubud cafe
Ubud Cafe Culture
Ubud is Indonesia's cafe capital — dozens of beautiful open-air venues serving excellent locally grown Balinese arabica coffee, smoothie bowls, avocado toast and fresh tropical fruit plates. Seniman Coffee, Revolver Espresso and Anomali are the best specialty coffee. Lazy Cat, Down to Earth and Clear Cafe are excellent for healthy meals. Instagram-worthy food at extremely low prices — USD 5–8 for a full breakfast.
📍 Ubud cafes USD 4–12
Jimbaran seafood beach Bali grilled fish fresh BBQ
Jimbaran Beach Seafood BBQ
The most romantic dinner experience in Bali — tables on the beach at Jimbaran Bay, feet in the sand, tiki torches, live guitar music and a massive grilled seafood platter (whole lobster, tiger prawns, grilled fish, squid and shells) as the sun sets over the water. The fish market here is one of Bali's best — choose your catch and pay by weight. Book a table at Menega or Bumbu Bali Beach for the best experience.
📍 Jimbaran Bay USD 20–50
Bali tropical fruit bowl dragonfruit mango rambutan
Tropical Fruit — Mangosteen & Rambutan
Bali produces extraordinary tropical fruits — not available in Nepal and not exported well. The mangosteen (purple, creamy, sweet-sour segments), rambutan (hairy red shell, lychee-like fruit inside), salak (snake fruit), starfruit, multiple varieties of banana and the notorious durian are all available for pennies at any market. Buy a whole bag for USD 2 at the morning market in Ubud.
📍 Morning markets USD 1–3/kg
Bali cooking class traditional spices rice kitchen
Balinese Cooking Class
One of the best activities in Ubud — a morning cooking class begins at the local market selecting spices (galangal, turmeric, kencur, lemongrass, kaffir lime, salam leaves) then returns to a traditional kitchen to make 5–8 dishes: base genep spice paste, sate lilit, nasi goreng, gado-gado peanut sauce, bubur injin black rice pudding. You eat what you cook. USD 30–45, includes market tour and all food.
📍 Ubud cooking schools USD 30–45
Insider Tips

Tips for Bali Travel

Visas, customs, scooters, temple dress and what to avoid

🌺
Top Tip
Always dress modestly at temples — a sarong and sash are required at every Hindu site
Bali is a deeply religious Hindu island and its temples are living places of active worship — not tourist attractions. A sarong (kain) covering the knees and a sash around the waist are required to enter all temples. Most temple entrances rent or lend these for free or USD 1. Dressing appropriately is not just a rule — it's a mark of respect that Balinese people notice and deeply appreciate. Equally, avoid touching offerings, entering active ceremony spaces, or behaving disruptively at any religious site.
🛂
VISA
USD 35 visa on arrival — 30 days, extendable once
Nepal passport holders receive a Visa on Arrival (USD 35, paid in cash at the immigration counter at Ngurah Rai airport). Gives 30 days, extendable once at any immigration office for another 30 days (USD 35). Keep your immigration card — it must be surrendered on exit. Have proof of onward travel and USD 35 in cash ready at the counter.
🛵
TRANSPORT
Scooter rentals — USD 6/day, but understand the risks
Scooters are USD 5–7/day and give complete freedom. However, Bali has one of the highest road accident rates in Asia — the roads are uneven, dogs and chickens roam freely, and left-hand driving is confusing for first-timers. An International Driving Permit is technically required. If you haven't ridden a scooter before, hire a private driver instead (USD 35–45/day). Much safer and only marginally more expensive.
💆
WELLNESS
Traditional Balinese massage — USD 10–15/hour
Bali is one of the world's great wellness destinations. A traditional Balinese massage (combining acupressure, reflexology and gentle stretching) costs USD 10–15 for 90 minutes at any legitimate spa in Ubud. COMO Shambhala (luxury), Taksu Spa (excellent mid-range) and dozens of local spas in the Ubud centre are all superb. Book a daily massage — it's the most affordable luxury in Bali.
🌡
WEATHER
Dry season April–October — best for beaches and outdoor activities
Bali's dry season runs April–October (low humidity, almost no rain, 28–32°C). Wet season November–March brings heavy afternoon tropical downpours (short but very intense). July–August is peak tourist season — most expensive and most crowded. May, June and September are the sweet spot: dry season but fewer crowds and lower prices. Ubud can be visited year-round since rain there is short and the rice terrace greens most vivid during wet season.
