About Bhaktapur

The City That Time Forgot

Bhaktapur (City of Devotees) is the crown jewel of the Kathmandu Valley. While modernity surrounds it, the city's ancient core remains astonishingly intact — brick temples, woodcarved windows and stone-paved squares unchanged for centuries. Home to 55 temples across four main squares, Bhaktapur is also famous for its living crafts — pottery at Potters' Square, thangka painting in workshops, and the celebrated Juju Dhau (king curd) you won't find anywhere else.

Unlike Kathmandu and Patan, Bhaktapur charges foreigners an entry fee that funds ongoing restoration — and the result is visible in every beautifully maintained façade and brick pathway.

🌅 Arrive at Durbar Square
Arrive before 8 AM for golden light on the temple facades and almost no tourists. The 55-Window Palace and the Golden Gate are most spectacular in morning light. Grab a tea at a street stall.
8:30 AM
🏯 Nyatapola Temple
Walk 200m to Taumadhi Square and climb the base of Nepal's tallest pagoda. The Nyatapola has survived every earthquake since 1702 — the structural engineering is extraordinary and unexplained.
💡 Tip: Climb the temple steps for the best city panorama views — temple interior is closed to non-Hindus but the exterior is breathtaking.

Walk to Potters' Square where dozens of artisans throw clay on foot-powered wheels. Morning is the best time — the clay drying in neat rows with temple spires behind makes for remarkable photographs.

The same as the half-day start — sunrise at Durbar Square and Taumadhi before the crowds arrive. Complete the circuit of Durbar Square temples including the National Art Gallery.

Walk the full route via Potters' Square to Dattatreya Square — the Peacock Window is the finest woodcarving in Nepal and the surrounding woodcraft and brass museums are free to enter.
💡 Tip: Dattatreya Square is 15 min walk from Taumadhi — follow the brick lanes rather than asking for a taxi. The walk IS the experience.

Wander the quiet Suryamadhi Square in the late afternoon before taxi back to Kathmandu (30 min). Bhaktapur is most magical as the day-trippers leave — the city returns to itself.

Foreigners pay USD 15 to enter the heritage zone — checked at each square. Keep your ticket all day. The combined Kathmandu Valley pass (USD 30) covers Patan and Bhaktapur.

Go early or late
Arrive at 7 AM for golden-hour light with almost no other tourists. The city is most crowded 10 AM–3 PM. Sunset from the Nyatapola terrace at 5 PM is spectacular.

30 min from Kathmandu
Taxi from Thamel: NPR 600–800, 30 min. Microbus from Ratna Park: NPR 40, 45 min. Easy to combine with Patan in one day — taxi between them costs NPR 400.

Eat the Juju Dhau
The king curd is only made in Bhaktapur. Buy from the stalls near Taumadhi Square — served in small disposable clay pots. Buy a large terracotta pot to take home as a souvenir.

Wear walking shoes
The entire city is explored on foot over cobblestones and uneven temple steps. Skip the heels — comfortable walking shoes are essential. The whole heritage circuit is about 3 km.

Respect temple rules
Remove shoes before entering temples and gompas. Ask permission before photographing puja ceremonies. Non-Hindus cannot enter temple interiors — but the exteriors are spectacular enough.
