Nepal's premier wildlife sanctuary — one-horned rhinos, Bengal tigers, and 600 species of birds in the Terai jungle
Chitwan National Park occupies a vast floodplain at the foot of the Himalayas — 952 sq km of sal forest, grassland, and the Rapti and Narayani rivers. It protects one of the last remaining populations of the greater one-horned rhinoceros in Asia, along with Bengal tigers, gharial crocodiles, Gangetic dolphins, and over 600 species of birds.
UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1984. Unlike the Terai of a generation ago, Chitwan today thrives because of conservation — the rhino population has more than tripled since the 1970s. A jeep safari at dawn here is one of the great wildlife experiences of South Asia.
Wildlife, culture, and jungle experiences you can't miss
Dawn jeep safaris into the core zone are where the magic happens — rhinos grazing at the jungle's edge, deer watching nervously from the grasslands, and if the stars align, a tiger crossing the road ahead of you.
Watch baby elephants being hand-raised at Sauraha — clumsy, playful, and utterly irresistible. The 8am feeding session is a highlight of any Chitwan visit.
An evening of traditional Tharu stick dancing — the indigenous people of the Terai perform elaborate group dances around a fire. An authentic cultural immersion that most tourists miss.
A dugout canoe glides past mugger crocodiles basking on the bank and gharials fishing in the shallows — an unexpectedly thrilling way to view the park's edge.
The 20,000 Lakes area (Bis Hajaar Tal) northwest of the park is an extraordinary birding hotspot — painted storks, open-billed storks, and rare Bengal floricans in season.
On foot through the buffer zone with an armed ranger — tracking rhino footprints, spotting deer, and learning medicinal plants. The most intimate wildlife experience available in Chitwan.
