About Chitwan

Nepal's Wild Terai — Where the Jungle Rules

Chitwan National Park occupies a vast floodplain at the foot of the Himalayas — 952 sq km of sal forest, grassland, and the Rapti and Narayani rivers. It protects one of the last remaining populations of the greater one-horned rhinoceros in Asia, along with Bengal tigers, gharial crocodiles, Gangetic dolphins, and over 600 species of birds.

UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1984. Unlike the Terai of a generation ago, Chitwan today thrives because of conservation — the rhino population has more than tripled since the 1970s. A jeep safari at dawn here is one of the great wildlife experiences of South Asia.

🍜 Taste of Chitwan — What to Eat

Tharu cuisine and Terai flavours you won't find in Kathmandu

Dhido traditional Nepali food
Dhido
Buckwheat or millet porridge — the Tharu staple, thick and earthy, eaten with spinach curry and river fish. Heartier and more interesting than plain rice dal bhat, especially paired with local vegetables.
📍 Tharu eateries NPR 200–350
River fish fry Nepal Terai
Rapti River Fish
Freshwater fish from the Rapti — marinated in local spices and pan-fried whole. A Terai speciality the Tharu have perfected over generations. Order it at any riverside restaurant in Sauraha.
📍 Riverside restaurants NPR 350–550
Dal Bhat Nepal
Dal Bhat
The Terai's version uses freshly grown rice from the valley — lighter and more fragrant than mountain varieties. The vegetables are different too: pumpkin, squash, and river greens specific to the lowlands.
📍 Any local restaurant NPR 180–300
Juju Dhau yoghurt Nepal
Juju Dhau Curd
Thick buffalo-milk yoghurt set in clay pots — mildly sweet, impossibly creamy. Eaten as a dessert or breakfast. The pots keep it at the perfect temperature. Once you've had it, packaged yoghurt is ruined forever.
📍 Local sweet shops NPR 80–120
Momos Nepal
Momos at Sauraha
Every lodge restaurant makes momos — steamed or fried, vegetable or buffalo. In Chitwan they tend to be larger and thicker-skinned than Kathmandu versions. A reliable evening snack after a long safari.
📍 Lodge restaurants NPR 150–250
Masala chai tea Nepal morning
Masala Chai at Dawn
Before every morning safari, your lodge will serve a glass of sweet spiced milk tea — ginger, cardamom, cinnamon — that wakes you gently before you face whatever the jungle has waiting.

Insider Tips

Travel Tips for Chitwan

What rangers, guides, and seasoned visitors know

Top Tip — Wildlife Viewing
Go on safari at dawn — not mid-morning
Animals are most active in the first three hours after sunrise. Mid-day safaris miss 80% of sightings as animals shelter from the heat. Book the 6am departure without exception — this single decision determines whether you see rhinos grazing openly or sleeping hidden in the grass.
🎟
ENTRY
Park entry fee — pay at the gate
Foreign visitors pay NPR 1,500/day for park entry (SAARC nationals NPR 750). Your jeep and canoe fees are separate. Confirm what's included in your lodge's safari package before paying double.
🦟
HEALTH
Malaria prophylaxis recommended
The Terai is a malaria zone. Consult your doctor about prophylaxis before travelling. Bring DEET repellent (30%+) and wear long sleeves after dusk — the mosquitoes here are determined.
🎨
CLOTHING
Wear neutral colours on safari
Khaki, olive, or tan only — no white, no red, no bright blue. Bright colours spook animals. Rangers take this seriously and may ask you to change. Pack neutrals exclusively for jungle days.
📷
PHOTOGRAPHY
Bring a telephoto lens (200mm+)
Rhinos at 50 metres look tiny on a phone camera. Even a kit telephoto lens (70–300mm) transforms wildlife photos. If you're serious about photography, the 400mm is worth the weight.
