The world's most audacious city — the tallest tower, the largest mall, a ski slope in the desert and a camel track beside a seven-star hotel. Where the impossible is built as a tourist attraction.
Dubai is the most extraordinary urban achievement of the modern era. In less than 50 years, a small fishing village on the Arabian Gulf has transformed into a global metropolis with the world's tallest building, largest indoor ski slope, busiest airport and most visited tourist attraction. For Nepali travellers, Dubai offers a unique combination: it is familiar (the large Nepali expatriate community makes navigation easy), nearby (4 hours direct from Kathmandu) and a gateway to the world (with connecting flights to over 240 destinations). Whether you come for luxury shopping, desert adventures or just to stand at the base of the 828m Burj Khalifa and feel appropriately small — Dubai delivers.
From the world's tallest tower to old Dubai's historic souks
The world's tallest building at 828m is the defining image of modern Dubai. The At the Top observation deck on floors 124 (or 148 for premium) offers the most extraordinary urban panorama on Earth — the entire Gulf coast, the Palm Jumeirah, the desert and the city grid laid out below. The Dubai Fountain at the base, choreographed to music, is the world's largest fountain show (free to watch from the walkway; shows every 30 min after sunset).
The quintessential Dubai experience — afternoon 4WD dune bashing across the rolling red sand dunes of the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, followed by camel riding, sandboarding and a sunset Bedouin camp evening with Arabic coffee, dates, shisha, belly dancing and a traditional buffet under the stars. A world away from the city skyscrapers 45 minutes away. Unmissable.
Cross the Dubai Creek by traditional abra water taxi (USD 0.30) between Deira and Bur Dubai — exploring the Gold Souk (world gold prices, no tax, spectacular jewellery), Spice Souk (saffron, frankincense, dried roses) and the Dubai Museum in Al Fahidi historical district. This is old Dubai — the city before the oil money — and it feels remarkably authentic.
The world's largest artificial island — a palm-tree-shaped archipelago stretching 5km into the Arabian Gulf with luxury residences, the Atlantis resort, NAKHEEL mall and a monorail. The Palm Jumeirah Monorail and the Dubai Eye Ferris wheel at the top of the palm give extraordinary aerial views. The public beach at Atlantis is open to day visitors and the sunset views from the palm back to the Dubai skyline are spectacular.
A 3km waterfront promenade lined with high-rise towers, yacht berths, restaurants, cafes and beach clubs — the most pleasant outdoor walking area in Dubai. The Dubai Marina Walk at sunset or evening is a beautiful stroll. From the marina, take an abra cruise along the canal for AED 100 (~USD 27) with views of the skyline and marina towers reflected in the water.
Opened in 2022 — instantly declared "the most beautiful building on Earth" by many architects. The torus-shaped building is clad in Arabic calligraphy windows and houses immersive exhibitions on AI, space travel, climate futures and human evolution. The building itself is a greater engineering achievement than any of the exhibits. At USD 35 entry it's one of Dubai's best value attractions.
