About EBC Trek

Standing at the Foot of the World's Highest Mountain

The Everest Base Camp trek is the journey of a lifetime. You'll cross suspension bridges strung with prayer flags, walk through ancient Sherpa villages where hospitality is a way of life, and sleep in tea houses perched on ridges with 8,000m giants filling every window. The route climbs through the Sagarmatha National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — past rhododendron forests, glacial moraines, and Buddhist monasteries that have stood for centuries.

At 5,364m, Base Camp itself is not the summit — it's the point where the mountain begins. Standing here, looking up at the Khumbu Icefall crumbling and groaning beneath Everest's south face, is one of the most humbling experiences on earth.

EBC Trek — Key Days

Highlights of the classic 14-day itinerary with daily spend

Day 1
✈️ Kathmandu → Lukla → Phakding
The most exciting 35-minute flight of your life — Tenzing-Hillary Airport at Lukla is the world's most thrilling airstrip, a single runway carved into a Himalayan ridge. Trek down to Phakding (2,610m) for your first tea house night.
💡 Pack your duffel the night before — 15kg limit on Lukla flights.
Day 2
🌉 Phakding to Namche Bazaar
The day of the famous Hillary suspension bridges — five high crossings above the Dudh Koshi gorge, prayer flags snapping in the wind. The final 600m climb to Namche is steep but the town materialises like a hidden Himalayan city.
Day 3
🏔 Namche Acclimatisation Day
A mandatory rest day — hike high, sleep low. Walk to the Everest View Hotel (3,880m) for your first clear view of the summit, visit the Sherpa museum, and browse the Saturday market. Your body is adjusting; let it.
💡 Drink 3+ litres of water. Avoid alcohol. Altitude sickness can hit anyone.

Day 4
🛕 Namche to Tengboche
A spectacular day's walk through rhododendron forest with Ama Dablam growing larger with every step. Tengboche Monastery at dusk — the perfect mountain monastery experience.
Days 5–7
🧊 Through Dingboche to Lobuche
The landscape turns stark and beautiful — fewer trees, more rock and glacier. Dingboche (4,410m) for another acclimatisation day, then across the Khumbu Valley moraine to Lobuche (4,940m).
💡 Headache is normal. Nausea that persists means descend immediately.
Day 8
🏔 Gorak Shep → Everest Base Camp
The final push. From Gorak Shep (5,160m), a 2-hour walk across the glacier moraine brings you to a cairn of prayer flags at 5,364m. You made it. The Khumbu Icefall groans and cracks above you. No words do it justice.

Day 9
🌄 Kala Patthar Pre-Dawn Climb
3:30am wake-up. Head torches and thermal layers. The climb to Kala Patthar (5,645m) in darkness, then the sky turns red and Everest's full south face is revealed — the greatest mountain view on earth.
💡 It will be -15°C at the top before sunrise. Down jacket, gloves, hat — mandatory.
Days 10–13
🏃 Descent to Lukla
Going down is faster — 4 days back through the same villages, but different light and different conversations. Your knees will feel it but the mountain gets smaller with each step.
Day 14
✈️ Lukla → Kathmandu
Final morning in Lukla — celebrate at a tea shop, buy a summit certificate, board the 7am flight. The valley shrinks below you. You'll be planning the next trek before you land.

Trek Fuel

🍜 What to Eat on the EBC Trek

Tea house menus at altitude — hearty, reliable, and surprisingly good

Dal Bhat trekker fuel Nepal
Dal Bhat Power
Trekkers say "Dal Bhat power, 24-hour" — and they mean it. This unlimited rice-and-lentil set is the safest, most nutritious meal on the trail. Order it twice daily and you won't run out of energy.
📍 Every tea house NPR 350–600
Tibetan bread butter tea Nepal
Tibetan Butter Tea
A thick, salty, yak-butter tea — earthy and warming, essential at high altitude where calories matter. Most trekkers need three cups before they stop hating it and start loving it.
📍 Above Namche NPR 80–150
Sherpa stew trekking Nepal
Sherpa Stew
A thick potato-and-noodle soup with whatever vegetables the tea house has in stock — warming, calorie-dense, and deeply comforting after a long day on the moraine. Perfect at altitude.
📍 High altitude lodges NPR 400–700
Momos dumplings Nepal trekking
Steamed Momos
Available up to Namche and Tengboche — enjoy them while you can. Above 4,000m, fresh vegetables become scarce and menus shrink to carbohydrates. Eat momos at every opportunity.
📍 Namche & below NPR 200–350
Ginger lemon honey tea trekking Nepal
Ginger Lemon Honey
The trekker's cure-all — a hot cup of ginger, lemon, and honey tea at every tea house. Anti-nausea, warming, hydrating. Have one first thing every morning before you start walking.
📍 Every tea house NPR 80–120
Energy snacks chocolate trekking Nepal
Namche Bakery Treats
The bakeries of Namche Bazaar punch far above their altitude — cinnamon rolls, apple pie, and carrot cake that rival anything in Kathmandu. Stock up on energy bars for the high camps.
📍 Namche Bazaar NPR 150–300
Insider Tips

EBC Trek — Essential Tips

What experienced guides and veteran trekkers know

Top Tip — Critical
Acclimatise properly — never rush altitude gain
AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) is the single biggest risk on EBC. The golden rule: never ascend more than 500m per day above 3,000m, and take one rest/acclimatisation day for every 1,000m of gain. If you have persistent headache, nausea, or confusion — descend immediately. No summit is worth your life.
🎒
PACKING
Hire a porter — carry only a daypack
A porter costs NPR 1,500–2,000/day and transforms the trek from an endurance test into a walk. They carry your duffel (max 15–18kg); you carry only a daypack with water, snacks, and layers.
🛂
PERMITS
Get all permits in Kathmandu
You need a TIMS card (NPR 2,000) and Sagarmatha National Park entry permit (NPR 3,000 Nepali, USD 30 foreign). Get both in Kathmandu — the Monjo checkpoint at the park entrance will check them.
💧
HEALTH
Drink 3–4 litres of water daily
Dehydration accelerates AMS. Use purification tablets or a SteriPen on tap water — never drink stream water. Hot drinks count toward your daily target; cold water at altitude shocks the system.
🛡️
INSURANCE
Buy high-altitude helicopter evacuation insurance
A helicopter evacuation from high on the EBC route costs USD 3,000–8,000. Buy travel insurance specifically covering helicopter rescue above 5,000m before you leave home. Non-negotiable.
📱
CONNECTIVITY
Buy a Ncell SIM in Kathmandu
Ncell has surprisingly good coverage to Namche and beyond. Above that, Wi-Fi at tea houses costs NPR 300–500/day and is slow but usable for messaging. Download offline maps before you fly to Lukla.
BUDGET
Budget doubles above Namche
Everything is carried by yak or porter above Namche — a Mars bar costs NPR 400 at Gorak Shep. Budget NPR 3,000–4,000/day for food above 4,000m. Hot showers cost extra; charging your phone costs extra.
