TRANSPORT
Always negotiate taxi fares upfront
Kathmandu taxis rarely use meters — agree on a price before getting in. Thamel to Boudhanath: NPR 300–350. Thamel to Airport: NPR 500–600. Prices rise 50% after 9pm and during rain. Pathao app is reliable and cheaper for short trips.
HEALTH
Pack a mask for bad-air days
Kathmandu's air quality can be poor, especially Dec–Feb when winds are calm and dust accumulates. An N95 mask is worth having — available at any pharmacy (NPR 50–100). Air quality apps like IQAir show real-time data.
CULTURE
Remove shoes & dress respectfully
Remove shoes before entering any temple or private home. Cover shoulders and knees at Pashupatinath — shorts and sleeveless tops are disrespectful and you may be turned away. A light scarf or sarong fixes this.

Carry cash — card acceptance is patchy

Trekking gear (boots, down jackets, sleeping bags) is 30–50% cheaper here than at trailhead shops. For authentic handicrafts — bronze statues, singing bowls, thangkas — go to Patan, not Thamel tourist shops. Patan artisans make the originals.
