Nepal's closest Himalayan trek to Kathmandu — just 7 hours away. Deep glacial valley, Kyanjin Gompa monastery and Tserko Ri summit views above 5,000m
Langtang is the quiet revelation of Nepal trekking. Just 7 hours from Kathmandu (the only major Himalayan trek accessible by road), the Langtang Valley delivers everything the Everest and Annapurna routes offer — glaciers, 7,000m peaks, ancient Buddhist monasteries and traditional mountain culture — with far fewer trekkers and a fraction of the cost. The valley runs east–west alongside the Tibetan border, with Langtang Lirung (7,234m) dominating the north wall. Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870m is the cultural heart: an ancient monastery next to a renowned yak cheese factory, with Tserko Ri (5,033m) rising behind it. A 2015 earthquake severely damaged villages here — the communities have rebuilt and welcomes trekkers warmly, with guest house income now essential to recovery.
From the Trisuli Valley to the glacier at 5,000m
The spiritual and practical heart of the Langtang Valley trek — an ancient Tibetan Buddhist monastery at 3,870m, flanked by the massive Langtang Lirung and framed by the glacier above. The yak cheese factory here has been producing cheese using traditional methods since the 1950s — eating fresh yak cheese with crackers at this altitude is a surprisingly wonderful experience. Multiple teahouses, good facilities and Tserko Ri accessible as a day summit from here.
A demanding 4-hour ascent from Kyanjin Gompa that reaches one of the most dramatic viewpoints in Nepal — Langtang Lirung (7,234m) appears close enough to touch, with Dorje Lakpa (6,966m), Ganesh Himal and the Tibet border peaks all visible. The optional summit is the single best reason to trek Langtang rather than other routes.
Above Kyanjin, the trail continues up-valley toward the Langtang Glacier — an additional half-day walk to the glacier moraine at around 4,800m. The ice walls and meltwater streams offer an extraordinary close-up of glacial geography. Most trekkers do this as an afternoon walk from Kyanjin rather than camping beyond.
The trek start — a lively market town at 1,460m reachable by bus from Kathmandu in 7–8 hrs. Warm and subtropical, with roadside restaurants, gear rental shops and permit checkpoints. The contrast between Syabrubesi's warm valley air and Kyanjin's glacial cold is part of the Langtang experience.
The rebuilt Langtang Village — almost completely destroyed by the 2015 earthquake and resulting avalanche. The community rebuilt from scratch and is now one of the most welcoming stops on any Nepal trek. A memorial monument marks the site of the original village. Staying here rather than passing through directly supports the recovery.
A classic circuit extension — cross the Laurebina Pass (4,610m) and descend to the sacred Gosaikunda lakes (4,380m), revered by Hindu pilgrims as Lord Shiva's bathing place. Continue down to Sundarijal near Kathmandu for a complete point-to-point circuit. Adds 3–4 days and a beautiful high lake section.
