The sacred birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama — one of humanity's most important spiritual sites, still alive with pilgrims, monks and quiet reverence
In the terai plains of southern Nepal, under a sal tree in a garden that has been continuously venerated for over 2,500 years, Siddhartha Gautama was born. The spot is marked by the ancient Maya Devi Temple — built over the exact birthplace. Today, Lumbini is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most spiritually significant places on Earth, drawing Buddhist pilgrims from Japan, Sri Lanka, China, Thailand, Korea and beyond, each having built a monastery in their own tradition.
The sacred sites and monasteries that define this extraordinary place
Built over the exact spot where Queen Maya Devi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama in 563 BC. The ancient temple houses a marker stone identifying the precise birthplace, and the sacred Puskarini pond where Maya Devi bathed before the birth still shimmers beside it.
Emperor Ashoka erected this sandstone pillar in 249 BC to mark his pilgrimage here, with an inscription confirming this as the Buddha's birthplace. One of the most important archaeological monuments in Buddhist history.
A gleaming white Japanese stupa built by the Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist order, offering a tranquil garden and lawn where pilgrims sit in meditation. The pagoda is particularly beautiful at dawn when golden light touches its dome.
Walk the monastery zone to see 30+ Buddhist temples built by Japan, China, Korea, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Germany, France and others — each in their own distinct architectural tradition. A quiet, extraordinary walk through Buddhism's global reach.
The ancient bathing pond where Queen Maya Devi is said to have purified herself before the birth of the Buddha. Pilgrims from around the world sit silently at its edges in the early morning. Peaceful beyond description at sunrise.
Archaeological finds from the Lumbini excavations — terracotta figurines, coins and sculptures spanning 2,500 years — provide crucial context for what you're standing beside. Worth an hour before visiting the temple.
