South Ari Atoll has the world's highest year-round density of whale sharks and is the Maldives' premier diving and snorkelling destination. Baa Atoll was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2011 and contains Hanifaru Bay — the world's largest known gathering point for manta rays and whale sharks (May–November). One of the world's most densely populated islands — 240,000 people crammed onto 2km². Worth a half-day before departing to your resort: the old Friday Mosque (17th century, built from coral), the colourful Maldivian fish market at dawn, and the harbourfront promenade. The fish market is extraordinary — 5am, every variety of tuna and reef fish unloaded from wooden dhonis. Malé is functional, fascinating and a genuine contrast to the pristine resort islands.

Kathmandu to Malé: direct or 1-stop via Sri Lanka, India or the Middle East (4–6 hrs). Visa on arrival at the airport — free for 30 days, Nepali citizens. The highlight of any Maldives trip — early morning speedboat to the South Ari Atoll whale shark feeding zone. The marine biologist guide will spot the first dorsal fin from the bow within minutes of arrival. You enter the water and follow the whale shark at the surface for an hour — these 8–12 metre filter feeders move slowly and gently and the encounter is profound. Multiple sharks are typically present. Return to resort for lunch. Flying at 1,200 feet in a small floatplane over the coral atolls, each a perfect turquoise ring in the deep blue Indian Ocean, is unlike any other flight experience. Seaplane transfers cost USD 250–450pp return versus USD 40–80 for a speedboat — and they operate only in daylight (most companies stop accepting at 3–3:30pm). Book atolls that require a seaplane at least once on your trip. At Baa Atoll (Soneva Fushi) or South Ari Atoll (W Maldives), there is no other way to arrive — and the first aerial view of your resort island rising from the ocean is the moment the Maldives fully delivers on its promise.

Nepal passport holders receive a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival at Velana International Airport (Malé). No pre-application required. The Maldives is Muslim (Islamic law), so be respectful on local islands — dress modestly outside resort beaches, alcohol is only available at resort islands, not on inhabited local islands. Resort restaurants are expensive — a resort dinner without a meal plan typically costs USD 80–150pp. When comparing resort prices, always price an all-inclusive or half-board package alongside the room-only rate. On most mid-range resorts, the all-inclusive package adds only USD 60–100pp/day and includes every meal, all house spirits and beer, water sports equipment, dolphin cruises and snorkelling excursions. Pack reef-safe sunscreen — regular sunscreen kills coral
Oxybenzone and octinoxate (in most regular sunscreens) are proven coral bleaching agents — and the Maldives' reef system is already severely stressed by rising ocean temperatures. All Maldives resorts now ban regular sunscreen and provide or sell reef-safe mineral sunscreen. Bring your own reef-safe SPF 50 sunscreen from Nepal (hard to source at resorts, expensive if available). Also pack: a rash guard for extended snorkelling, polarised sunglasses for reading reef fish from the surface, and a waterproof phone case for underwater photography.

The Maldives has two seasons — dry (Nov–Apr) and wet (May–Oct)
November–April is the dry season — less rain, better visibility (excellent for snorkelling), calmer seas, and higher prices. December–January is peak and most expensive. May–October is the wet season — brief heavy showers (rarely all day), slightly greener, lower prices by 30–50% and the whale sharks and manta rays at Baa Atoll's Hanifaru Bay are most abundant (June–November). The wet season is genuinely good value and for divers, one of the best periods for large pelagic encounters. The ocean temperature is 28°C year-round — there is no bad time to visit the Maldives.
